How to start YouTube – do it on the cheap

In Technology by Sean3 Comments

So, it maybe that you’ve either been putting your content up online for a while (using something like a blog) and now you want to start to create YouTube videos as well; or you want to just start putting content online and video production seems like an easy way to start. It is by the way.

The problem, you maybe thinking (well there maybe two or more things that you’re thinking at the moment but lets start with the one in this post) is that you need all this stuff that is going to cost money to start. You need a video camera. You need a computer and you need video editing software.

I can’t help with the computer but…

Ok, so I’m afraid you do need a computer of some sorts to do your editing. I can’t really recommend anything free or cheap. Well, that said, you can edit video on your phone. Some do that with various degree of success. I’ve tried it. I found it easier with software on the iPhone that Android – but only slightly.

Personally, I find editing on a computer the best way, and you have a bigger screen. So, as I say, I can’t help with the computer – but if you have a PC somewhere with Windows running; that that is great. If you have a Mac, then this is also good.

So,if you have an old PC lieing around then you have the first bit of hardware needed. If you don’t, go off and check ebay or Gumtree. There are usually some good cheaper computers going these days. But for the software I am going to be telling you about in a bit, the minimum spec you need is as follows:

  • Windows PC – 64-bit version of Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10
  • Apple Mac – OS X 10.10 Yosemite, OS X 10.11 El Capitan or macOS 10.12 Sierra
  • Internet connection required for online activation and web services
  • Intel Core i3, Core i5, Core i7 or AMD equivalent
  • 4 GB RAM (8 GB or more recommended)
  • Graphics processor with at least 512 MB video memory.

Next the software

Ok, so if you were to look around for video editing software, it can get expensive. You can pay anything up to hundreds of pounds. However, there is one bit of software that you can grab for free.

I want you to check out Hitfilm Express. This video editing software is the lighter version of a piece of expensive software and has more than enough editing power to put together your YouTube videos – regardless if its a vlog or product review. They make money by offering extras you can buy and plugin – but you won’t need it for just editing.

Software ticked.

The video camera

Now, this is where it can get expensive. These days you see people talking about how they record their video on this DSLR or that video camera. The cost, when I looked, made my eyes water for sure. I’m sure you find that too.

You forget though, that you are potentially carrying around a fantastic video camera.Your smart phone. Most smartphones these days record in HD and have a good quality video output. You don’t need an expensive video camera. All my videos on my channel are currently recorded using my smartphone and they all turn out great.

So, keep it cheap and use the hardware you have. If you don’t then check out ebay again and get a cheap webcam to start. You can record vlogs quick and easy straight from your webcam.

One last bit of software

One last bit of software you may want to look at is called CamStudio. This is a piece of open source software (so free) that allows you to record your desktop. This is great if you going to be doing some sort of demonstration or how too.

Its free after all.

So there you have it, start for cheap

So, there you have it. Just a small post of advice on how to start your YouTube videos for cheap. Some of it you can grab for free; so all the software. The hardware, you may already have around the house?

Now, I can’t tell you how to record your video as that is going to be unique to you – but at least, if you follow the advice here – you’re able to start for no big outlay of monies (maybe none)

Have fun recording your YouTube – and why not post the links below to your content for us to check out.

  1. It has become clear that vlogging seems to be the way forward and what companies are looking for. But my fear is not the tech… But the actually talking and people seeing it. I am just not confident like that.

I love to talk. Though sometimes have problem with social side. Easier if talking at a camera, for me that is. Though I like to try and push and do the things I feel I need to. Did that this week by standing up and talking to some people.
